    Country: South Africa

    Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

    Appellation: Franschhoek Valley

    ABV %: 14.76

TASTING NOTE: The wine shows a gorgeous black-to-purple color which is a true testimony of the quality and condition of the hand-sorted berries which made it into the cellar. On the nose aromas of black currants, creme de cassis and balsamic are at the forefront.

Secondary to that the wine shows fragrant aromas of dried flowers, black peppercorns and allspice. Very complex. Tannins are present, yet very well integrated with polished finesse. On the palate the sheer size of the wine is evident. The tannin, fruit, alcohol and oaking gives this wine great elegance, body and weight.

Put this wine in your cellar for at least 5 years before opening. It will last for the next 50 years if cellared correctly.

    Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

    ABV: 14.76%

With a red wine as robust and intricate as the Marathon, it is well paired with fatty meat like grilled lamb with plenty of rosemary or a marbled ribeye fresh from the barbecue. Duck or other game birds are an ideal match for the juicy, sweet berry notes in the wine.

Aged, semi-hard cheeses like gouda and cheddar have enough flavour to hold their own against this bold red. If you prefer a more gourmet approach, a herb-encrusted sheep’s milk cheese will enhance the herbaceous notes in the Marathon. Roasted, salted nuts are the perfect snack partner.

About the Winery: Paserene is a boutique winery in Franschhoek, owned by Martin Smith and Ndabe Mareda, that produces high-end, luxury wines. With a strong emphasis on “sense of place and people”, we take great care to ensure all the wines we produce, the artwork on the labels, and the tasting experience is truly authentic and guarantee a lasting legacy. The name Paserene comes from the Latin word Passeriformes, the order of “travelling and free” birds containing swifts and swallows.

Wine Vintages, Bottle Labels, ABV, Ratings, & more

If an item does not have the vintage in the title/item name, we do not guarantee a specific vintage unless we explicitly advertise that vintage for sale. Additionally, the pictures of products on our website are for visual/informational purposes and do not necessarily indicate the current vintage(s) or labels available.

While the product images depict the intended product, label designs and packaging may be altered by the producer/manufacturer at any time. We do not guarantee a specific label or bottle design when you order.

The Alcohol By Volume / ABV percentage reported is meant to be a general guideline given fluctuations in production, sometimes ABV is reported as a range (ex. 12.5% - 13.5%), etc.

Wines labeled as "highly rated" are wines that at some point, including prior vintages, received excellent reviews and scores/points from established critics (and we do our best to report the specific vintage reviewed in the product description notes). It is meant to indicate (as a general guide) that the wine producer received accolades for that product for convenient filtering when browsing and searching.

Dietary Claims, Ingredients, & Other Product Attributes

We make every effort to accurately describe the wines we sell, including any claims made by the wineries regarding the wine's ingredients, additives, or production methods. However, we cannot independently verify the accuracy of these claims. When wineries label their wines as "low sugar," "gluten free," "low sulfites," or any other claim, we rely on the information provided to us and simply label the wines as we are told. Therefore, we cannot be held responsible for any inaccuracies or omissions in these claims. It is always recommended that customers consult with their healthcare professional if they have any concerns or questions about the ingredients in the wines they are purchasing.
